We carry out assessments for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (our reports are recognised by the HSE, CAMHS, NEPS etc). ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by persistent high levels of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. Studies suggest that ADHD is more common in boys than girls. Children with ADHD often demonstrate challenging behaviours, especially those with high levels of hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Individuals with ADHD may have difficulty focusing on, organizing and finishing tasks, and may also have a weak short-term memory (e.g., may have trouble remembering three or four part set of instructions). Research shows that students with ADHD are at higher risk of poor academic achievement and early school/college dropout than other students. It is important that ADHD is identified and appropriate interventions are implemented as early as possible.

A number of theories have been put forward to explain the aetiology (i.e., cause) of ADHD. These range from genetic and neurological explanations, to explanations that focus on environmental and societal factors. Research shows that ADHD often responds well to behavioural and/or pharmacological interventions.

ADHD is diagnosed using psychometric test batteries, rating scales, checklists and clinical observations. As part of the assessment process, we may request reports from other professionals (e.g., physicians), and make referrals for treatment/interventions as necessary.
